Winning Elections Matters, But Serving People Matters More’: VP Radhakrishnan at Rajasthan Assembly’s 75-Year Celebrations

Addressing the valedictory session of the 'Vidhayi Gaurav Yatra', the Vice-President urges legislators to prioritise public service, constitutional values, and constructive dialogue over political differences.

AIPUR, July 15, 2026 – The Vice-President of India, Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan, today addressed the valedictory session of the Vidhayi Gaurav Yatra: Former and Sitting Members’ Conclave, organised to mark the 75-year milestone of the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly. In a stirring address at the Vidhan Sabha, he reminded elected representatives that while electoral victories are significant, they are meaningless without a steadfast commitment to public welfare.

“Winning elections is important, but serving the people is even more important,” the Vice-President asserted. “Elections are won through votes, but the lasting respect and affection of the people are earned through sincere public service.”

The Heartbeat of Democracy

Describing State Legislatures as the “living heartbeat of Indian democracy,” Shri Radhakrishnan noted that while Parliament reflects national aspirations, it is the State Assemblies that give voice to the hopes and concerns of every village, town, and family. He praised the Rajasthan Assembly’s unique initiative of bringing together former and sitting legislators, commending Speaker Shri Vasudev Devnani for conceptualising a conclave that preserves institutional memory and allows younger lawmakers to learn from the wisdom of their predecessors.

On Debate, Dissent, and Decisions

Emphasising the essence of a healthy democratic culture, the Vice-President acknowledged that differences of opinion are natural in a pluralistic society. However, he drew a clear line between dissent and dereliction of duty.

“In a democracy, we may agree to disagree, but we should all agree on one thing – our unwavering commitment to the people and the Constitution,” he said. Recalling his message to members of the Rajya Sabha, he added, “Debate, discussion, or even sometimes disruption must lead to a decision.”

He urged legislators to uphold the dignity of their conduct and ensure that parliamentary interventions translate into tangible policy outcomes.

Lessons from Personal Experience

Sharing an anecdote from his tenure as a Lok Sabha member, Shri Radhakrishnan revealed that recommendations made by the Parliamentary Sub-Committee on Textiles, which he had convened, ultimately led to the creation of the Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme. He used this example to stress that even a single constructive suggestion from a legislator can trigger significant policy reforms, and encouraged members to actively engage in committee work and debates.

Rajasthan’s Legacy and the Call for Selfless Service

Paying rich tribute to the state’s history of valour and patriotism, the Vice-President invoked the legendary loyalty of Maharana Pratap’s horse, Chetak. “History can never forget Maharana Pratap,” he observed, “but it also remembers the unmatched loyalty and sacrifice of Chetak. Every individual, irrespective of the role they hold today, has an opportunity to leave behind a lasting legacy through sincerity and dedication.”

Quoting a verse from the Thirukkural, he reminded the gathering that leaders who remain accessible and courteous earn the enduring trust of the people. He further urged lawmakers to draw inspiration from the Bhagavad Gita, performing their duties selflessly without being anxious about rewards, as honest public service is always recognised in due course.

A Vision for Viksit Bharat @2047

The Vice-President called upon all legislators to preserve the dignity of legislative institutions and strengthen the spirit of constructive dialogue. He stressed that integrity, humility, and dedication are essential to realise the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047, adding that a “Viksit Rajasthan is integral to a Viksit Bharat.”
