Ummer Khan, an emerging actor from north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, is all set to make his mark in the entertainment industry with the release of an SKTV web series.

Interestingly, the web series, which is to be released soon, is produced by Salman Khan Productions and Ummer follows Salman Khan as his icon.

Hailing from Khawaja Bagh area of Baramulla but originally born in Limber village of Boniyar Tehsil to parents who are both teachers, Ummer decided to take up acting as a career when he was adjudged as Mr Personality at the freshers’ party in his college.

This is one of the biggest platforms for the young actor for making his presence felt and attract eyeballs but Ummer has been working for the last many years. He has acted in Tamil film industry, featured in Crime Alerts show and Hindi serial “Kasautii Zindagii Kay 2.”

In Kasautii Zindagii Kay 2, which was one of the most-watched Indian television soap operas, he played the role of ‘Dr Roshan’.

Khan these days is excitedly waiting for the release of his debut web series, under the Salman Khan production, SKTV. The web series was initially titled Surgical Operation Team (S.O.T) but the makers are now contemplating to change the title entirely. “I was passionate about acting from my childhood, but I even did engineering along with that,” he says with a short laugh.

He adds, “I had to face the society and my parents. I didn’t let my studies impact my passion for acting. In college, I was even awarded Mr Personality and it just struck my mind.”

Initially, Ummer Khan worked as a video-jockey with local cable channels. Afterwards, he went to Chandigarh for engineering and landed in Delhi for modelling. “And finally, I reached Mumbai for kick-starting my acting career,” he says.

Besides acting, Khan has some rap songs to his credit as well. He also indulges in Modelling and has made some interesting short films, available on his YouTube channel.

Asked about his hardships for chasing such a career in a traditional society like Kashmir, Ummer said that he did not concede defeat even though he faced a lot of hardships “including the typical criticism of society when you choose such unorthodox fields.” “At all times, I just focussed on my goal and my efforts are now paying off slowly,” he says in a joyful tone.

One thing that helped Ummer Khan stay away from controversies is the fact that he didn’t stay in Kashmir for long and spent most of his life outside the Valley. He says, “Even when I faced taunts from my relatives for choosing to do acting, I just thought of positive things that the profession had on offer and did what my heart wished.”

When asked about his early struggle, he says, “When you start, you have to face problems. It was the same with me but when my parents realized my potential, they let me chase my passion. They support me fully now.”

Pertinently, his father, a lecturer at a government-run college, and mother, a teacher at a government-run school, both wanted him to do something else, perhaps a government job.

About his learning, he says that he has learnt from all the people that he worked with all these years. “With time, you get to know what is missing in you and you try to fill those gaps,” he adds.

The young actor has important advice for all the youth, especially those choosing an unorthodox career. He opines, “Whatever you do, either right or wrong, people talk on your back all the time. I didn’t give much heed to such futile criticism and that really helped me a lot. What I mean exactly is that struggle is in every field, but you must change your mentality. Only when you work hard and value your profession, then success is all yours.”
